Interview by RUNESCHADOW
Dark Salutations.
We present you with yet another unpublished interview (originally intended for my 'zine THE MORTUARIUM) done in 1998 by myself with TREV BAMFORD, the mastermind behind the English gothic rock luminaries MIDNIGHT CONFIGURATION. The information are of course quite dated but we hope you will still enjoy the interview for what it's worth.
Thank you, RUNESCHADOW, A.D. MMIII
1. A brief history of MIDNIGHT CONFIGURATION and the complete discography.
Midnight Configuration are a band who are constantly evolving, changing and developing along a very unique road. Essentially the brainchild of former "Every New Dead Ghost" guitarist Trevor Bamford. Trev formed "Midnight Configuration" originally as a solo project back in mid 1993 with the purchase of his first sequencer. Shortly afterwards he put out his first solo CD maxi. A four track affair where Trevor did absolutely everything! Once the wheels were in motion Trevor started work on the second maxi "Spectral Dance" which was released on the 31st of October 1994 at the very first "Carnival Of Souls" the famous gothic/fetish festival then held at Rock City Nottingham. This night also saw the debut performance of the "band". As time went on now famous label mates "Suspiria" wanted to tour the UK and wanted a band to tour with. So Trev Formed a proper "Midnight Configuration" which consisted of Trevor Bamford Lisa Ross Backing vocals and Nick Hopkinson guitar to tour witht them! Shortly after this time the "Kissing Skull" was released. Their highly acclaimed debut CD album. A homage to Goth, horror films and fetishism which included a 28page booklet of fetish/gothic photographic artwork! This CD cemented "Midnight Configuration" in the gothic public's mind eye. Before that time "Midnight" was a solo project, now it was a band with a very strong identity. A lot of the imagery associated with the band revolve around the mesmeric and photogenic Lisa. The tainted sweetness vocaled ice queen of Goth. The famous "Dark Desires" t shirt has gone down in modern gothic history for it's shocking and challenging nature!
As time rolled on a high profiled tour with US legends Rozz Williams and Gitane Demone on their UK tour brought the unit more welcomed attention. Also the same year(1996) saw the band play several well attended gothic festivals. The "Monsters Of Goth" festival in September saw the band play in front of over 1000 people. As did October's famous "Carnival of Souls". The band stormed the audience each time and left the stage triumphant!
At the time of writing this thumbnail history of the band. "Midnight Configuration" ar in the end process of finalising tracks for their long awaited second album "Funeral Nation". A July release date is shortly to be confirmed. This CD promises to be more explosive and dynamic that even the "Kissing Skull" album! For small taster of the album to come an unmastered version of the song "Sinister Sinister" is on the new gothic compilation CD "The Hex Files". And also on the Spanish zine and CD "The Black Box". A similarly unmastered version of the song "Graveyard Eyes" is on the "Bats and Red Velvet" magazine and limited edition free CD issue 20. Also new news of "Midnight Configuration" is that on keyboards is Lisa's Boyfriend Richard Chambers.
Since the above was written, Midnight Configuration have also released the groundbreaking remix album "Digital Interference" which features a collection of remixes and outtake scratchmixes recorded over the period from "The Kissing Skull" to "Funeral Nation". As well as touring the UK with Gothic greats "Two Witches" Additional infor for MC fans is that Lisa and trevor are involved in a MC side project called "Brother Orchid", the work on the debut mini album called "Wintershadow" is being Finalised over the next few months. Check out the track "Warmth Beneath Winter" on New Alternatives 4 for a sneak preview of the band's sound.

2. MIDNIGHT CONFIGURATION is the best exponent of the so-called DARK BEAT. Did you coin this term? How would you best describe this form?
In a lot of respect we regret being involved with the term "Darkbeat". I think much better description of our music would be neo Gothic Darkwave. But that is a bit of a mouthful. The term Darkbeat was coined by Glenn Wilson, and has come to represent much more accessible sound than what is Midnight Configuration.
3. NIGHTBREED is quite successful both as a label and distribution firm (just look at the size of its catalogue and it's still growing!). Please tell us about the evolution of NIGHTBREED (I remember ordering stuff from you way back in the late '80s / early '90s when there wasn't even a NIGHTBREED label/dist. yet!! You've come a long way!)
Its' actually quite a long story, but Nightbreed as everyone knows it, grew out of an older organisation also called Nightbreed. That organisation was set up purely to release one compilation LP, and then finish. However, once the LP came out I was inundated by people wanting music by the bands on the LP. I was going to call the fledgling mail order company something else, but seeing as everyone in the scene knew the name. I stuck with it. That was back in 1990, but the mail order side didn't take any real shape until 1991/92. So it's been going in one form or another since 1990. I was the one who established the organisation. Once I started getting orders on a regular basis, I re animated Nightbreed as a label. It's been growing eve ince. Thanks for your kind comments about NB by the way.
4. I know this is old hat already but what was the main reason for the dissolution of your former band EVERY NEW DEAD GHOST? Do you think that ENDG have already reached the legendary status that they so richly deserve?
The whole ENDG story is quite a long one, again! But basically, we were tired out and fed up with the whole thing. Essentially we were bringing our heard against a brick wall for 5 years. We were broke, all our equipment was trashed and we all had enough in one way or another. I personally thought we had lost the plot a bit, and I wanted to go in another direction. I always look back on those years with a bitter sweet view. We had some great times, but in our hearts we knew we had come to the end. As for legendary status, I don't know as I am too close to it all. The thing I do notice is that Goth bands never die, their memory lives on and on. I would like to think of ENDG like that.
5. Do you think it's necessary for some bands to re-issue old tracks in the form of re-mix "albums"?
Why not! It's the best way in which the past can interact with the present. At this very moment we are working on a "best Of" CD whereby all the old Midnight Tracks I have picked for the album are being Re-mastered to bring the sound quality up to late 90's digital standards. A remix album is a bit of fun, if people don't like it, fine, but music is not written in stone.
6. What is your opinion about the burgeoning U.K. GOTH scene? Is Britain about to re-establish herself as the motherland, the mecca so to speak, of the whole GOTH universe? Was there indeed a RENAISSANCE, in a big way?
It's a strange situation over here at the moment. In a lot of respects, "Goth" has come out of the underground in terms of a scene presence, but at the same time there are very few new UK bands active to any degree. I think that in terms of creativity, on the whole, the UK is not the Gothic motherland any more. It's still Germany in my book. However, with the surfacing of the scene, I think a whole new generation of bands will be on their way within the next few years.
7. Goth is more popular than ever in the international underground (whether for its betterment or detriment). What can you say about the state of the international Goth movement in general? Do you think GERMANY is still the source for all that is new and exciting? Are we still experiencing new innovations musically, or are we in a dead-end?
Again this links to my answer above. Yes the whole Gothic underground has become very popular over the last few years. Innovation is there within the scene if people are to just look. Here at Nightbreed we have, and continue to do, push the scene on in terms of accepting different ideas within the general confines of the genre. But the whole Retro thing within certain parts of the UK scene will and does. hold us back as a developing scene. So to answer the last part of the question, I think that in a lot of respects the future of the scene is up for grabs, it's only dead end if you let it become one!
8. What is your opinion about the growing animosity of certain segment of the Goth world towards the immensely popular MARILYN MANSON? Is it justified?
I think it's just an old guard rattling their sabres. The Goth scene always is what the majority think it is! The trick is to bring on board new influences and to work with them. I personally am not too keen on MM's music, but I respect him and I believe he has done a lot to open up a new generation to the Gothic scene. I remember a time when what became the "Gothic Scene" were anti Sisters, later anti Nephilim etc. I rest my case!
9. There are "illustrious" personages in the scene that have been quoted as disowning/bad mouthing Goth and the very same scene / people that hailed and idolized them as their heroes. What can you say about these ingrates / traitors?
It depends on your point of view. A lot of the "old School" bands never thought of themselves as "Goth", they just got on with the music and in the 80's found they had attracted a particular Gothic audience. As time has gone on, they hav found that pigeon hole they were placed in became a millstone round their neck, not allowing them to move on in any way. However, as much as I understand the reasons why, I believe you are made by the people who like your music, and to them you are forever in their debt. This is one thing I like very much about the new underground generation of Gothic bands, they are very much "of" the culture, rather than "for" the culture which is what a lot of the 80's bands were about. In a nutshell, they are Goth's and have no qualms about the situation. But as you say, ignrates are ingrates!
10. There's a recent wave of reunions and reformation amoung the Ancient Relics (Bauhaus, The Sisters, The Creatures, Gene Loves Jezebel, Theatre of Hate, The Nephilim, Clan of Xymox etc.) Is it really necessary to resurrect long-buried careers? Shouldn't they just keep their old glory intact and unblemished (kept in a vault somewhere), and not rehash themselves to death? I say, put the old corpse to rest. Are they still wanted? What do you say about this curious phenomenon?
I agree with you on one hand, but on the other if you consider things from the band themselves point of view. Why shouldn't they get together if they want to. I know personally members from at least one of the bands you mentioned. Their view is that they gave a good part of their lives to creating a band, they are getting all the UK mainstream press, but the UK Gothic underground is still being treated in the same way, (.e. ignored, pretend it doesn't exist) as before. If it helps the new bands in anyway, then it's a good thing. However, as a general rule I think that perhaps it is best to let the past be.
11. One of the greatest loss within the Goth world had been the death of ROZZ WILLIAMS (the legendary co-founder of CHRISTIAN DEATH) this year (1998). What is your opinion about this tragedy?.
Yes, yes, I agree with you. I personally liked Rozz Williams. He was a great man, and a very shy and nice one to boot. When we heard the tragic news we were all really upset. Our guitarist Nick hasn a great note dating back to a UK tour we did with him saying how much he loved Midnight Configuration, and wanted to work with us again. That will never be, sadly!
12. What's in store for MIDNIGHT CONFIGURATION fans? Is there a follow-up (new material) to 'Funeral Nation' in the offing? Please tell us more about future projects / releases within the NIGHTBREED camp.
Well, as for anyone interested in Midnight Configuration. We currently are working on a best of compilation called "Dark Desires". This CD will contain loads of our older material covering the years from Gothtec to Digital Interference. All the older tracks will be re-mastered and there will also be 5 exclusive "Suspiria" remixes and the cover of the CD will have some previously unseen Midnight Configuration fetish photos. Also, we hav ebegun work on our next full studio album. So far there is no title, but we have 4 tracks totally written with another 2 nearing completion. One of the tracks we are working on is a cover version of Play Dead's "Walk Away", but done in a Midnight style. As for other projects that I am involved in, the main one to mention is Brother Orchid. This is a more Gothic purist venture, but it is still bringing in electronic influences. So far we hav released a mini CD called "Winter Shadow". The project is a mixture of me, Lisa, Mark and Ex Suspiria and Kneil Brown. We hope to put out a full length album some time early next year. Another project I am involved in is Sekhem Horus which is essentially an Egyptian Black metal Vampire project. All the songs are to be based on the Egyptian Book of the Dead. We are planning on recording an album next year. On this particular project I play the guitar only. Also, Mark (Ex Suspiria) is getting his new musical project together, so far the music sounds just where Suspiria left off and we expect to make an announcement very soon regarding the band's name and the CD's release date.
13. Any last words you'd like to impart to your audience?
Thanks for the support, keep the faith, and if you want any more information about Nightbreed or any of our releases, please write to us enclosing a self addressed envelope and an international reply coupon. Thanks for the interview. Trev.
Update 06/29/03 THE RAZOR SKYLINE have just released their latest album, "THE BITTER WELL" and it is my pleasure to present to you an interview with Ghundi a.k.a. The_Gun by Gerard Bumanglag. Immerse yourselves, darklings!
1. What were your beginnings like in the music industry?
When I moved to Seattle I had never played in a goth or industrial band before, but I jumped right in by joining a band called Shallowhead that was part of the northwest electro-industrial coalition (NEC). We played a bunch of shows in Seattle and Portland with the other NEC bands (Kill Switch...Klick, SMP, Noxious Emotion to name a few), put out a demo tape and started getting some radio play. That put me in contact with a lot of people in the goth/industrial scene so that when I quit Shallowhead and started Journal of Trauma (which became The RaZor Skyline) with Karen, we were able to get things started very quickly. We had our first show after 3 months, had a demo tape out after 4 months and did a live radio show in Seattle after 5 months. Soon after that we were talking to COP International and they signed us within a year of us being together. Our first CD came out soon after that and the song "Queen of Heaven" started hitting dance floors everywhere almost immediately. So things happened very fast for us in those first two years.
2. How has your craft evolved throughout the years?
Well, my programming has definitely improved as well as the equipment I use to program. When RaZor Skyline started we had one keyboard and I programmed everything on it, including the drums. Now I've got a whole studio full of keyboards, samplers and drum modules that I use Digital Performer to program. My guitar playing has also definitely improved and I'm more comfortable with using more guitar parts in our songs. In the beginning I tried to keep the guitars in the background for fear that we wouldn't be able to connect with the industrial purists that the label was trying to sell us to. After it became obvious that they weren't going to like us anyway, I stopped hiding the guitars and started putting them higher in the mix.
3. The aura of your band represents womanhood in many ways. Do you have plans to participate in doing the vocals and songwriting?
No, not really. We've been together for quite a while now and we've developed a system that we know works. I write the music and Karen writes the lyrics. Whenever she needs me to add a vocal line here or there, I do. Otherwise I leave it to her. There's no reason to shake things up now.
4. Which classifications of music can best describe the sound of TRS?
That's hard to me to say. When I read reviews of our stuff, I often see
the words "goth", "new wave",
"soundtrack", "electro", "death Rock" and "metal" all used to classify
us. I wouldn't disagree with any of those.
5. Your musical complexity can only mean that your influences are diversified. Please name a few?
Oh yeah, we have some very diverse incluences! Between Karen, Onyx and myself, we like David Bowie, Duran Duran, Motley Crue, Billy Idol, The Cure, Stevie Nicks, Siouxsie and the Banshees, X, Black Sabbath, The Doors, Johnny Cash, Joy Division and A Flock of Seagulls to name a few.
6. The "Journal of Trauma" album addressed issues of mistreatment and injustice happening around us and in our personal lives, would you consider it your mission to help correct these problems?
I wouldn't say it is our mission to correct them. I don't think we even consciously try to address them. More often than not, Karen just acts as a lyrical mirror reflecting the state of the world around her. Just because we're the people who see a fire and yell "fire" doesn't necessarily mean we are the ones who will ultimately put it out. Just the fact that we started the ball rolling may be our part in the big picture. I think Karen is often just pointing her finger in our songs and saying "hey, look at this situation that we need to be paying attention to".
7. Does it set the mood for your upcoming album "The Bitter Well"? Kindly tell us more about it.
I would have to say that none of our albums lyrically have anything to do with each other. Each album is its own entity - a time capsule containing pieces of our life and the emotions that are occurring at the time we write and record the album. When things in your life are causing you grief, you have a tendency to focus inward and that gets reflected in your song writing. This is where songs like Suicide Me, Pray for Me or Fade and Sustain come from. When events around you start pulling your attention outward, you write songs like Pretty Things, It's all about Me or American Tragedy.
8. The song "After the Flood" is definitely my favorite. What new songs can you recommend to your listeners?
I would recommend Corporation, American Tragedy and Rebellion Lost. I personally really like "Freak" just because of the atmosphere it conjures up and the memories of the recording process we went through. Karen sings very softly in it and to record all the nuances of her voice, we had to really crank the microphone up. It was really hot that day in Seattle and we were recording upstairs in a loft with all the windows open so we ended up recording birds and the breeze along with Karen's vocals. You can't really hear them in the finished song, but they're there and I think they subconsciously add to the atmosphere of the song. Of course, I have a story to go with each song that makes them special to me, but people will just have to attach their own experiences to their favorite song.
9. What are your thoughts about the "Fade and Sustain" album?
We were in at the time. Karen and I had just start working together again after spending a year apart. During that year, neither one of us was really able to get anything going musically so when we got back together and the chemistry between us ignited, we were very excited about it and very optimistic, perhaps even a bit idealistic. The album is not all love songs and happy happy joy joy songs, there are still some dark songs on it. However, there are some songs where we stop to look around and say "Yeah, things aren't great, but they could be worse"
10. You have been a part of many compilations, basing on your discography. Do you give much credit to your record label for this or is it the result of your own collective endeavours?
It's been partially the work of the label and partially our own efforts. Oftentimes we'll get emails from organizations interested in using one of our songs on a compilation. I think they email us directly because our internet presence is so much bigger than the label's. They were able to find our website much more readily. On the other hand, the label has lots of personal and business contacts with other labels and magazines in Europe where they are able to get us on compilations that we would never know about.
11. It must be a blessing in disguise that you had to go through legal matters with your band name, The Razor Skyline is actually a lot better than Journal of Trauma.
Yeah, that did actually turn out for the best, although at the time it was pretty stressful. The entire album was done and ready to go when we got the bad news so we had to put everything on hold until we could come up with another name for the band.
12. With your amazingly melodic songs and must-have albums out there in the open, what more is in store for the fans?
We're definitely planning on doing some touring to show off the new material. We're putting together a pretty hard hitting set, shelving a lot of the mellower songs and bringing back some songs off of Journal of Trauma that we haven't played in years. If you get a chance to catch one of our shows, definitely go. Once we get the urge to tour out of our systems, I'm sure we'll sit down and start working on the next album.

AUDIBLE LIFESTREAM "Experience from Escapism" CD (self released)
I have known one Francis Gerard (better known as the vox of the local Goth rock band FIVE WOUNDS TO ENTER) for quite some time and we share a lot of musical things in common, tastewise. AUDIBLE LIFESTREAM explores another of his musical facet, mainly soundscapes / atmospherics. Call it experimental, these are structured pieces as opposed to the common notion that the term "experimental" would imply.
Aided by a handful of sonic kindred spirits, Francis was able to gather a few years' worth of effort. Recorded between 1998 and 1999, the creative focus of this project have been fully realized, and finally put on disc for everyone to enjoy and appreciate.
Drawing inspiration from domestic sociological issues and concerns, they have managed to vindicate their vision and principles via their musical skills and knowledge and through impassioned performances.
Though I can draw parallellism to so many sources (I doubt if they are fully aware of this), like the ethno-socio-political agenda and Neo-mediaeval gothicism of Ireland's very cult THE REVOLUTIONARY ARMY OF THE INFANT JESUS, the post-prog exploration of the entire CUNEIFORM RECORDS roster, a tinge of ISOLATIONISM, the French legends UNIVERS ZERO, the DARK AMBIENT works of STEVE ROACH, ROBERT RICH, ANNA HOMLER, VIDNA OBMANA, O YUKI CONJUGATE, Japan's VASILISK (another legends), World Music (I could go on and on), I decline to categorise this form of expression simply because pigeonholing is, for me, both pointless and meaningless as far as this music is concerned.
Dream-like but not abstract, its echoes resonating with truth. So delve into the inner thoughts of these passionate individuals and feel the conviction and yearning. Hope as motivation. NEW AGE this definitely is NOT.
NOTE: Please do seek out another of Francis' side project, CENTELLA ETHEREA's live performances if you have a chance for it is surely worth your effort, and of course, support Five Wounds to Enter.

NAMES ARE FOR TOMBSTONES "Phantoms" DEMO CD
Names are for Tombstones. Music as sombre as the name invokes. NAFT is a one-man operation based here in Manila. Cliched adjectives abound, inescapable and inevitable and I will let the readers fill in the blanks. These recordings are essentially on a demo production level and it shows, but quite competent for its kind, and the sheer effort is commendable. I must point out that the entire music is programmed, no "live" or "organic" instruments save for Nono's voice. The aesthetics in terms of packaging, at first glance, is strongly reminiscent of PROJEKT (USA) and HYPERIUM (Germany), the quintessential DARK WAVE record labels of the early '90s. (I suppose unintentional for I doubt he has ever been exposed to the latter label's output at all.)
A fave track of mine, "Exasperated Machine", is upbeat and catchy enough to be in my regular DJ playlist. It has a very strong club appeal especially among the old school set.
I could come up with a plethora of artists to compare his music with, past and present, and I will. From something more recent like mid period LYCIA. (Not so much the style but the feel, and of course LYCIA is much more superior, both in scope and texture) Cavernous, deceptively spacious and yet claustrophobic; to something more distant like very early NEW ORDER (right after JOY DIVISION): "Movement", "Lowlife", "Power Corruption & Lies", minimal, emotionally oppressive. Let me include other like-minded spirits; the very English sound of A HAUNTED SAWMILL (NEW ORDER clones, I know), the gentle musings of THE JUDGEMENT OF PARIS, the forgotten aural vistas of THE ARMS OF SOMEONE NEW.
The distant voice is desperate yet in control, imploring, like a figure sitting on an old wooden chair, upright, in the middle of an almost empty crumbling apartment with just a flickering yellow light bulb for company, the sound of city traffic outside the solitary window, pedestrians ten floors below busy with their own empty lives, oblivious.
These songs are indeed like our ghosts / phantoms. Overlapping, intermingling, then dissipating, in confusion, in a blur. I love this music. It evokes my past, and bespeaks my present. Doomed romanticists are forever. Rest In Peace.

RUNESCHADOW'S SONG OF THE WEEK: "SCHIZOPHRENIA" by DRONNING MAUDLAND from "Maelstrom" CD (1994 Glasnost Records - Germany)
by Runeschadow
NOTE: The following interview was conducted by myself with
Tomas Pettersson, the mainman of ORDO EQUILIBRIO, in 1998. They have long since changed their name to ORDO
ROSARIUS EQUILIBRIO. In five years, so many
things/developments have taken place in their career.
I hope the information contained below would still be
very beneficial, relevant, informative and profound
enough to warrant your attention, both O.R.E. fans and
dark music enthusiasts in general. Thank you.
RUNESCHADOW
1. Please tell us about the beginnings/genesis/development of the Ordo Equilibrio formation?
The aspiration to establish Ordo Equilibrio was by virtue of my desire to execute an aesthetic and creative outlet for the essence of my philosophical, ideological, spiritual and sexual aspirations. In unison with the prospective upsurge of profound, subconscious yearnings, and the eventual consequence of self-realization; alongside the conceivable upsurge of redundant, ethical, moral and terrestrial alteration.
And which still remains a primary objective of Ordo Equilibrio today.
The resolution however to initiate an individual project, concurred during my former involvement in Archon Satani; Mikael Stavostrand decided to establish his side project "Inanna' in 1991. But awaited to resolve until May of 1993 when I decided to relinquish my participation in Archon Satani by virtue of various inconcistencies pertaining to the bands current status and continuing progress, and initiate Ordo Equilibrio alongside my contemporary lover and accomplice Chelsea Krook.
2. Is the tag 'Apocalyptic Folk Industrial' appropriate for your music? Are you comfortable with that label?
The music of Ordo Equilibrio has attained a variety of diverse definitions, 'Black Folk Industrials', 'Dark Ambient Industrials', 'Sacro Orchestral Industrials' etc., etc., but has customarily and more recently come to be referred to as 'Apocalyptic Folk Industrials'. But whether this is a genuine designation or not, is seemingly in the eyes of the beholder.
The designated description is however fine with me.
3. Discuss the meaning of Ordo Equilibrio symbol 'The Wheel'.
The seal is initially from Aliester Crowley's deck of tarot - the '4 of Wands'.
The seal serves as an ideal representation of Ordo Equilibrio and my philosophical, ideological and spiritual conceptions and expositions. Converging and signifying both Balance and Completion along with the force of Will - the inner circle of eight flames - four doubled; signifying the flames of energy in play, asserting balance and uniting Completion of Limitation through the seeds of disorder. All of which are represented as part of my individual understandings and objectives.
4. Please discuss your new album 'Conquest, Love & Self Perseverance'. How different (or similar) is this CD from your first two CD releases ('Reaping the fallen, The first harvest'; 'The Triumph of Light... and Thy thirteen Shadows of Love'; both on Cold Meat Industry?
'Reaping the fallen, The first harvest' was conceived during a stage of exploration whilst still in pragmatic chaos, searching for what I aspired to factually utilize. Consequently illustriating why people regularly perceive it as more experimental.
'The Triumph of Light... and Thy Thirteen Shadows of Love' was however conceived as a consequence of partially managing to direct my objectives and finding the path of progression. Ensuing in the outcome of more order and melody.
'Conquest, Love & Self Perseverance' is conclusively consistent of an evolved quantity of harmonies to that of 'The Triumph of Light, and They Thirteen Shadows of Love', alongside a similar quantity of sexually related impressions to that of 'Reaping the fallen, The First harvest'. Consequently making it the most complete Ordo Equlibrio working so far.
It is altogether an intrinsic convergence and continuation of its predecessors, alongside the consolidated constituents utilized throughtout the previous workings, but more pragmatically emphasized.
5. What is your opinion about the entity known as Archon Satani?
Archon Satani is the initial invention of Mikael Stavostrand and me back in 1990; and an altogether gratifying experience that certainly has assisted me on my path of becoming what I am today.
Our fundamental working 'Virgin Birth' is certainly a pleasing accomplishment, although I do not conceive the Mikael's continuing workings without my participation as coequally entertaining, intriguing or innovative.
6. Please expound on the true essence of Satanism. Is there a difference between Satanism and Luciferianism? Which church or organization do you belong in? Is it fair and justified that Satanists and Pagans are lumped together as one and the same?
I believe Satanism and Luciferianism, along with any philosophical and spiritual conviction endorsing the utilization of human potential and the confidence in individual workings; both associated and disassociated with Satanism, are vastly more advantageous spiritual applications by which to pragmatically effectuate interaction, realization and decisive gratification pertaining to life; more appropriately than by virtue of all other philosophical, religious and spiritual convictions.
And I am thus, spiritually and philosophically supportive of specific and explicit conceptions comprised throughout the appointed satanic establishment, as aI believe they more prosperously would realize the individual that I endorse, and decisively contribute with a more natural, and certainly more operative comprehension of mankind. Alongside a genuine comprehension of the contemporary terrestrial status in which we subsist, and at the hand of which they both successively could be improved.
Satanism however requires definition. Basically since the term too often has been abused, distorted and thus become wrongfully projected into a certain terminology and definition. Decisively perverted by the prejudice conjectures of the contemporary media and the uninitiated constituents of society. And thus become exclusively representative of the deplorable exertions of seemingly demented black metal teens. And concisely with exclusive reference to actions of church burning, the desecration of graves, along with the alleged sacrific of abducted indfants etc., etc. Consequently being, as we all know, the customary behavior of any alleged and genuine Satanist throughout the world...
Satan has come to be representative of all that which Christianity and Judaism fear. And as Satan in Hebrew translates 'adversary', Satanism merely justifies and materializes their dogma and the factual objective of their aims.
Christianity desperately sought any enemy to prevent individual enlightenment of spiritual progress, and the actions they knew would eliminate their religious and sociological authority, they made representative with Satan and Lucifer. Exemplified by enlightenment, individual action and the alleged desire to stand above god, Hybris.
Satan is accordingly representative of all seven deadly sins,
establishing the foundation of human nature; Lust, Greed, Sloth, Envy, Pride, Gluttony and Wrath. Representative of all that which is human, natural, and individually gratifying, all that which would eliminate mankind's requirement for superficial faith.
Satan does not necessarily or naturally by definition of its symbolism and terminology, impart Love nor comfort, but the actions representative of Satan as a philosophical concept and spiritual energy, may impart gratification, comfort and decisive enlightenment, resulting in the outcome of Love. Which simultaneously would bring about the termination of all superficial faith, and consequently establish a conviction in the workings of individual, human potential.
Satanism for instance, places the key of salvation in the hand of the individual, rather than in the hands of superficial ignorance.
I believe however that a needlessly large quantity of members; particularly conspicuous throughout various American left-hand publications, and seemingly more prevalent throughout the American Satanic establishment, is wasting a needlesly vast quantity of energy on the perpetual endorsement of their satanic vocation. - I am a Satanist and I am proud of being a Satanist; I am a Satanist and I am proud of being a Satanist; I am a Satanist and I am proud of being a Satanist, and so forth. And which more appropriately could be directed ina pragmatic context for the accomplishment of something constructive. But which I believe it is not, and which I regard as a tragic waste of both eventual skill and potency.
But Satan and Lucifer being two genuinely disparate individuals & entities; certainly make Satanism and Luciferianism two distinct spiritual essences.
Despite the situation that they are both conceivable to situate along the conjectural 'left hand path', and that the contemporary society recognizes them as one - 'The Devil'.
I am neither part nor undividedly supportive of any religious, spiritual and/or political association, as I believe they solely confine the perspective and consequently procure involuntary prejudice partaining to objectivity.
Do I believe it is justrified to congregate Satanists and Pagans, recognizing them as one unity? No. They are separate and should according to their individual disposition be recognized as such.
7. Would you consider the 'spiritual' expressions of Ordo Equilibrio as true and pure, compared to other so-called 'Satanic' artists? What is your opinion of Black Metal bands (de)glorifying their beliefs through their art?
The conjecture of true and pure is an altogether subjective comprehension; and accordingly, the signification ofwhat is factually trie and pure prevails in the eye of the beholder. But naturally I recognize my philosophical, sexual & spiritual comprehension as altogether more accurate and absolute than that of most others.
So what is my opinion regarding Black Metal?
I discern most Black Metal bands as nothing more but an inclination of inverted Christianity. There is no constructive foundation as part of their music and their so-called Satanism; anything opposed to Christianity goes.
I farther believe the vast majority of their motivations consist of no factual objective or reason, but rather an apprehension of destruction for the mere sake of destruction.
The acknowledgment and utilization of the natural and untamed forces of this world have been exercised for thousands and yet thousands of years; and no teenage movement is ever likely to change this situation to any greater and more extensive perspective.
The evil that is customarily assumed throughout the apprehension of Black Metal and its congregated discernment of Satanism, is the insinuated evil of Christianity - evil by Christian standards, and which ultimately makes themsubmit to the standards of the Christian belief and its ethical apprehension, equally to the Christians themselves.
The signification of evil is subjective, but would from an individual perspective suggest all taht which is not individually gratifying. And if these purported Satanists truly would like to be evil, in associationwith their comprehension of Christianity, they would rather have to become Christians.
I do not apperceive Satanism and the conducts associated with its philosophical and practical application as evil - but more appropriately as good. Physically and psychologically egendering self-realization, prosperity & natural behavior; on the contrary to Christianity which substantiates the opposite behavior; consequently making it evil.
This contemporary interest pertaining to Satanism will however diminish over time. Some will remain; others will vanish, while Satanism, as a spiritual and philosophical entity ultimately will sustain as before the upsurge of any purported 'Black Metal Movement'.
This contemporary spiritual & political uprising may rather be estimated as a general reaction against something altogether sociologically erroneous - a situation that ultimately needs to be altered for something more applicable. And the increasing interest in Satanism is just one response to this entire transpiring situation.
8. Do you ever perform live? Do you have an elaborate S&M set-up on stage? Would you consider each O.E. live presentation as religious ceremony, 'The Ritual of the Ultimate Fetish'?
Performing live we try to present an act that stands in relation to the philosophical, spiritual, aesthetic & sexual appreciation of my very being, whether it is of militia and/or fetishism; further accompanied by drums, banners and flaming fires.
We used to incorporate various sadomasochistic elements throughout our live setting, but as we started to conceive these exertions as tedious and personally unsatisfying, we decided to relinquish their incorporation, in wait of innovating new and yet invigorating practices which to incorporate.
I am however conclusively pleased with what we have accomplished heretofore; but as we are still investigating the possibilities and disadvantages with regrards to performing live, and still are learning about the necessary constituents to succeed - our performance will most certainly evolve as we proceed.
I suppose each performance we exert is a factual exhibition of my individual fetishistic preferences; but I am however not inclined to maintain the conviction that it is 'The Ritual of the Ultimate Fetish'. As to realize this would unfortunately require more than I am contemporarily able to accomplish.
And in conclusion I can only say - Do not expect anything, and you won't be disappointed.
9. Is sexuality, and the indulgence in its most extreme forms, the total attainment of self-consciousness? Is the act of perversion/s the purest form of human expression, the most sacred of all rituals, the true and only art?
Perversion translates corruption, and what perversion factually is; is the corruption of behavior; not indispensably, acts affiliated to sexual deviance.
The achievement of self-realization is the succeeding accomplishment of understanding and utilizing ones individual dispositions, not the mere consequence of wallowing in the most extreme forms of activities not affiliated to your very being neither consciously nor subconsciously disposed to any such activities, but yet excessively indulging in them merely in attempt to attain self-realization would procire any measure of good? I do not believe so, but more likely procure mental and/or physical impairment.
Sex however, despite its extremity - tranquil or extreme, but more appropriately in association with individual appreciation, maybe nourish your successive individual cognition in aspiration to procure self-realization. But merely the term 'self-consciousness' itself translates the foregoing attainment of individual cognizance, not mere acts of undivided indulgence solely to attain it.
10. What is your opinion about the current state of industrial genre? Has it reached its pinnacle? Is there any more room for innovation?
I believe the contemporary industrial scene is occasionally entertaining. There is naturally a large quantity of bands that are seemingly incapable of utilizing something altogether intriguing, and merely pursue in the predetermined footsteps of their predecessors; but likewise occasional gems in an ocean of gravel.
Whether the industrial scene has reached its zenith or not is difficult to ascertain. There was formerly a notable interest pertaining to industrial culture in the early eighties, by virtue of SPK, NON, Monte Cazzaza & Throbbing Gristle. But solely to disappear from the surface of the earth and withstand in obscurity. And as the contemporary interest to all appearances is still increasing, it yet remains to determine whether this situation will endure or conceivably expire.
But although I personally hope for a continuing expansion in interest, I am disinclined to believe in any notable commercial success or in customary sales beyond the apportionment of ten or possibly twenty thomsand copies per working; as the industrial scene altogethere is too aesthetically extreme for any larger and prospective clientele.
The comprehension of 'industrial' varies depending on who interprets its signification; and is furthermore comprised of a seemingly extensive amplitude of dissimilar aesthetic activities - akin and entirely disassociated. And to conjecture that innovation has reached its pinnacle, especially in the situation of being aesthetically capable to utilize such a vast variety of diversified sounds and aesthetic possibilities, is solely and needlessly restraining oneself.
11. Are you happy with things as they are concerning your relationship (business or artistic with the label Cold Meat Industry?
I am satisfied with being part of Cold Meat Industry, as I believe it is an altogether progressing label with an extensive measure of integrity. And as far as our seemingly satisfying cooperation sustains, and as far as I am entitled to exert my individually residing aesthetics without compromise and supervision, I see no reason not to remain part of CMI.
12. What should we expect from Ordo Equilibrio in the near future? Have the exploration and cleansing just begun?
There is the prospective possibility of brief collaboratios with various artists, as for instance - M2, 412, Les Joyaux de la Princesse, No Festival of Light and American author Rob Hardin. But as each collaboration is awaiting to be resolved, there is no further information regarding these eventually upcoming activities.
An official full-length video release is likely to be available at some point in 1999, likely accomplished in association with video artist Michael Prey a.k.a. Fetish 23. But as it is currently being developed it seems pointless to estimate the date of its releases.
Yet another limited working is likely to be available at the time of Walpurgis 1999. But as this working is contemporarily being spawned in association with the above intimated video working, it yet remains to be completely realized.
